◎ 最上級を強める副詞(句):ずばぬけて一番~、まさに一番~
much + the + 最上級~
by far + the + 最上級~
the + very + 最上級~ ※the の位置に注意!
◎ 同一物(人)についての比較の最上級 ⇒ 同一のモノや人の中での最高を表す場合、the はつけない
● This lake is deepest at this point. (この湖はこの地点が一番深い。)
比較例:( This lake is the deepest in Japan. → これは「他のモノ」との比較です。)
◎ 絶対最上級 - きわめて程度が高いことを表します most = very
● She is a most beautiful girl. (彼女は非常に美しい少女だ。) × 一番美しい
◎ the + 最上級 = even ~ (どんな~でも)
● The smallest child knows such a thing.
(小さな子供 でさえ そんなことは知っている。)
◎ at one's best (最良の状態で)
◎ at best (いくらよくても、せいぜい)
◎ the least (最も~でない )
● He is the least skilfull player. (彼は最も下手な選手だ。)
◎ the last (最も~しそうにない)
● She is the last girl to be late for school. (彼女は最も学校に遅れそうにない少女だ。)
◎ not ~ in the least = not ~ at all (全く~でない)
◎ make the most (best) of ~ (~を最大限に利用する)
◎ 最上級から比較級・原級への書き換え
● He is the tallest boy in our class.
= He is taller than any other boy in our class. (比較級 + than any other + 単数名詞)
= No other boy in our class is as tall as he. (No [other] 単数名詞 + as ~ as …)
= No other boy in our class is taller than he. (No [other] 単数名詞 + 比較級 ~ than …)
= He is as tall as any boy in our class. (as ~ as any + 単数名詞)
